How Verbal Authenticity Shapes Person Perception

Researchers investigated the impact of verbal authenticity on person perception by combining human judgments with natural language processing. The findings suggest that verbal authenticity is positively associated with interpersonal interest, engagement with speeches, entrepreneurial success, and social media engagements.

The study involved analyzing dyadic conversations, TED talks, Shark Tank pitches, and tweets, and demonstrated that communicating authenticity is linked to greater interest and perceived connection to others, higher engagement with TED talks, obtaining financial investments, and more social media likes and retweets. This study is one of the first to explore the relationship between authenticity and person perception using verbal data, and highlights the importance of being genuine in communication.
