Speech Analyzer Instructions

This application was designed to analyze text from speeches and display a range of insights on pre-defined topics, summary measures, in-speech personality, narrative progression, and more. For information on how to use the application, please see the instructions below.

Step 1:

Click on the “Browse” button to select a speech to analyze. All uploaded files should be in .txt, .doc, or .docx formats. 

 

Step 2:

Click the “Submit” button, and wait for the speech to load. This may take a few moments.

 

Step 3:

Begin navigating the application. The application is divided into the following tabs and sub-tabs.
 

  • Summary

    • Overview : 

      • Displays a word cloud, emotions, and insights on pre-defined topics.

    • Persona: 

      • Displays a personality profile of the uploaded speech, as well as the dominant personality traits

    • Topic Summary:

      • Displays insights on how the pre-defined topics scored on measures of analytical thinking, cognitive processing, clout, authenticity, emotionality, and sentiment. 

 

  • Narrative 

    • Topics:

      • Displays the attention given to each of the 19 pre-defined topics throughout the speech.

    • Arc of Narrative

      • Staging:

        • Displays the degree to which a speaker is establishing the basic background of a story by explaining locations and relationships amongst people. This section also displays the overall sentiment across the entire speech. 

      • Plot Progression:

        • Displays the degree to which a speaker is moving the plot of a story forward. This section also displays the overall sentiment across the entire speech. 

      • Cognitive Tension:

        • Displays the degree to which a speaker is building tension in a story. As speeches reach their peak, speakers will often resolve the tension by providing a resolution. This section also displays the overall sentiment across the entire speech.

 

  • Comparison

    • Communication Effectiveness

      • Displays insights into the degree to which the speech is communicating with clarity, logic, from a knowledge and confidence. Includes measures of clout, organization, analytical thinking, cognitive processing, and assertiveness.

    • Communication Style:

      • Displays insights into the communication and writing style of the speech. Includes measures of ambition, aggressiveness, affiliation, achievement, power, reward, inward vs. outward focus, and temporal focus.

    • Emotional Tone:

      • Displays insights into a selected range of emotions and attitudes present in the speech. Includes measures of overall sentiment, positive emotions, negative emotions, excitement, gratitude, anger, disgust, fear, empathy, energetic, genuine, authenticity, extraversion, friendliness, sociability, and agreeableness.

Notes:

1. To compare speeches under the “Comparison” tab, upload your selected file as in Step 1. Before pressing “Submit”, select the speech or speeches you would like to compare to. To select multiple speeches for comparison, press and hold the Control key (for PCs) or the Command key (for Macs) to select the speeches of interest. After the speeches have been selected, press the “Submit” button. To change the speeches for comparison, simply click on a new speech (or speeches, using the Control or Command keys) from the inventory and allow the application a few moments to load.

In addition to selecting multiple speeches from the database, the application also allows you to upload multiple speeches of your own when using the "Comparison" tab. To do so, click "Browse", upload your speeches of interest, and press "Submit". 

2. To conduct additional data and graphical analysis on the given measures, you can download the raw scores in a .csv format. To do so, simply click the “Download Results” button. Currently, the application only allows for the results of the uploaded speech to be downloaded.
